Constitution

Article I. Name and Purpose

Section 1 – Name

The name of this organization shall be the Cambridge University Korean Society, also referred to as CUKS.

Section 2 – Purpose

It is the purpose and goal of CUKS to promote the education and enrichment of its members and the university community of Korean culture through involvement and participation in various social, cultural, and political activities.

Article II. Members

Section 1 – Membership Requirements

Membership shall consist of any current members of the University of Cambridge or those affiliated with the University who actively participate in CUKS events and have paid the annual dues.

Members have a right to be present at any general meeting of the Society and a right to vote. Dues shall be collected at the beginning of each academic year at the first General Meeting and thereafter by the Treasurer. The amount shall be set and subject to change by the Executive Board each year.

Section 2 – Non-Discriminatory Policy

Even though the Society members are primarily composed of peoples of Korean descent, this organization and its members shall not discriminate against any individual(s) for reasons of race, colour, creed, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, sex, age, or handicap.

Article III. Executive Board

The responsibilities and powers of the officers are as follows:

Section 1 – President


a) Represent CUKS, acting as spokesperson and ambassador.

b) Preside at general CUKS meetings.

c) Facilitate executive board meetings.

d) Oversee organizational activities.

e) Assist all executive officers.

f) Provide motivation for the organization.

g) Be open to all opinions and input.

h) Provide follow-up to organizational tasks.

i) Has power to appoint replacements to vacant Executive Board positions.

Section 2 – Vice-President

a) Preside at organization meetings in the absence of the president.

b) Serve as liaison to members of CUKS to ensure internal unity.

c) Direct Constitutional updating and revision.

d) Facilitate Elections.

e) Serve as chief advisor to the President.

f) Perform other duties as directed by the President.

g) Serve as President in the event that the President is unable.

h) Supervise fundraising activities and work with the Treasurer for seeking business sponsorship for CUKS.

Section 3 – Treasurer

a) Prepare the organizational budge with the Advisor.

b) Keep track of receipts, reimbursement forms, supply request, etc

c) Collect dues and keep track of dues payments.

d) Maintain a financial history of the organization.

e) Inform the executive board of all financial matters.

f) Make termly reports of all receipts and disbursements.

g) Seek out business sponsorship for CUKS and prepare letters to sponsors, working with the Vice-President in doing so.

h) Perform other duties as assigned by the President.

Section 4 – General Secretary

a) Prepare an agenda with the President for meetings.

b) Keep the Society informed of events by way of newsletters and emails, along with the Secretary


and Webmaster.

c) Maintain attendance (roll call) at all meetings.

d) Serve as Society¡¯s social chair, implementing ways for members to socialize and spend time in fellowship.

e) Maintain and phone and e-mail directory for all members.

f) Reserve meeting rooms for the quarter and year.

g) Prepare for events by purchasing refreshments or decorations, delegating when necessary.

h) Perform other duties as assigned by the President.

Section 5 – Secretary

a) Record and maintain minutes of all organization meetings.

b) Send minutes to all appropriate members and organizations.

c) Work with General Secretary and Webmaster in sending out newsletters and emails to the Society.

d) Make brochures and posters for advertising events as necessary, delegating jobs if needed.

e) Perform other duties as assigned by the President.

Section 6 - Webmaster

a) Maintain the CUKS website by keeping it updated with news of events and listing of current officers.

b) Keep a running list of members¡¯ emails and phone numbers.

c) Work with the General Secretary and Secretary in preparing newsletters, sending them out and posting them on the website.

d) Actively work in maintaining a public awareness of the Society.

e) Perform other duties as assigned by the President.

Article IV. Elections

Section 1 – Voting

a. Only members shall be able to vote and each member shall have one vote.

b. There shall be no absentee voting.

Section 2 – Nominations and Qualifications

a. Candidates for offices must be current members of CUKS.


b. Nominations may be made in written form, specifying name of nominee and nominating position, or verbally when nominations are taken at the annual election of officers.

Section 3 – Elections

a. Elections are for all executive offices.

b. Elections shall be held once a year.

c. Elections shall take place at the beginning of the academic year.

d. Elections shall be held by secret ballot.

e. Simple majority (>50%) wins for all contested offices, and a revote will be taken if no candidate wins majority.

Section 4 – Term of Office

a. Terms of office for all positions shall begin commence immediately after a new board has been elected.

b. Terms of office shall last for one year.

Section 5 – Vacancy

a. Any vacant office shall be filled with the approval of the Executive Board.

b. The Vice-President shall assume the presidency if it is vacated for any reason.

Article V. Amendments

This Constitution is binding to all members of the Cambridge University Korean Society, but the constitution is not binding unto itself.

Amendments to the constitution may be proposed in writing by any voting member of CUKS at any meeting at which two-thirds of the voting members are present. These amendments will be placed on the agenda for the next regular meeting of the executive council or other officer grouping.
